Part 1:
the global health focus is on environmental and occupation health (and determinants). Review the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and/or got to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs website on the SDGs: https://sdgs.un.org/goals. There are several of the 17 SDGs that directly (specifically) address environmental and/or occupational/industrial issues as they relate to health and well-being. Other SDGs may have a more indirect impact on health and health outcomes related to an environmental and/or occupational/industrial issue(s).
For your first discussion (with a word count of > 500 words)…Select and briefly describe 1 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), that either directly or indirectly relates to environmental or occupational health. Then select, describe and, discuss either an environmental OR occupational health issue within one of the following contexts: (1) The natural environment OR (2) The built environment.
Depending on the issue selected, some of the areas you may want to consider covering and/or emphasizing (though you DO NOT have to cover all of these) are: related statistics/data, risk factors, burden of disease, who is affected, ways to address the issue as it relates to health and well-being, possible interventions (and at what levels within the Social Ecological Model), how to prevent impact(s) to health, creating sustainability (possibilities, limitations, barriers), etc. The goal is to reduce any current disease/disorder and to prevent any future impact(s). Remember to cite any reference(s) – in-text and at the end. APA format
Part 2:
Read the guidance/instructions below, do the exercise(s), and then share your experience(s) and reflection on this exercise. If you have had other related experiences to this, please share these as well.
The purpose of this Empathy Exercise is to better understand issues on water availability and accessibility that take place in many developing countries.
Water is essential for life. People in developing countries often have to haul water from rivers, wells, and/or pumps for their personal and household needs, such as for drinking, cooking, bathing, and cleaning. Hauling water is often over long distances and can take hours or even most of the day to complete. This task is usually the work of women and girls. In some areas, girls often do not attend school, so they can do their household chores (such as collecting water).
For this Exercise – You will need to find: (1) A medium/large bucket or container, or a 5-gallon bucket (open containers are okay), (2) A way to measure a distance (such as a tape measure, use of a car odometer, or a walking measurement/estimate), and (3) A water source (facets, hose, etc.)
Next…Plan a path outside for walking and measure/estimate the distance. It can be around your yard or parking lot, down your street, on a trail, or in any other outdoor spot. You can measure/estimate the distance by steps, feet/yards or by division of a mile. And it should be a ‘waterproof’ area, since some spilling may occur.
Then…Fill the bucket or container with water (near the top or you may want or need to limit the amount of water, since you do not want to overextend yourself by lifting and carrying too much water).
Now…By holding the bucket or container by the handle(s), carry it along or around your path.
After this activity, answer the following questions (in a narrative/descriptive format):
How did this carrying method feel when you carried the bucket or container?
When did the bucket of water begin to feel heavy, if it did?
Did you complete your path or at what point did you stop?
Did water splash out? Estimate the amount of water that lost.
What challenges did you encounter?
Think about, reflection upon and write about… Accessibility to water… if you had to do this once or twice a day or several times a week for all of your water use. How much water would you be able to retrieve and how would you allocate its use? What do you think some of the challenges may be for a family to meet their daily needs, such as for drinking water, cooking, washing, bathing, etc.? Besides hauling the water, if this water is to be used for drinking think about the process that needs to be taken for safe (potable) drinking water: if filtering, if boiling, etc. and then for storage. If boiling, fuel needs to be considered. Is fuel readily available? Does it need to be collected (which also takes time)? Is it something the family needs to purchase? …etc.?
Ask yourself – How much water do you use or need (and/or waste) for each of these? If you have limited water, how would you prioritize your usage, etc. Become aware of your daily activities…
