Effective teachers use formative assessments as tools to evaluate students’ acquisition of the content and to modify instruction. Strategically selected technologies can support teaching practices and ELL students’ comprehension and demonstration of their learning.
Allocate at least 4 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Part 1: Observation and Interview
Observe one content area lesson in a K-8 classroom with ELL students. Focus your observations on formative assessments and the use of technology in assessing ELLs. After the lesson, spend at least one hour interviewing your mentor teacher about the use of technology to support formative assessment strategies. Include the following questions in your mentor interview:
How do you use formative, summative, and diagnostic assessments throughout the school year? How do you use data from different types of assessments to inform instructional decisions, particularly for your ELLs? Which of these types of assessment data do you share or discuss with other colleagues? Why and when is it shared?
How have formative assessments helped you in monitoring the content knowledge and language development of your ELLs? What are specific examples of formative assessments you regularly use in your classroom?
What are some ways you differentiate instruction and employ accommodative assessment practices in the classroom for ELLs? How do you prevent bias, such as cultural or linguistic, in the instruction and assessment of ELLs?
What are the benefits of utilizing technology when assessing ELLs? What are some of the challenges? How have you used technology and/or what technology would you like to use to assess your ELLs?
How do you use rubrics in your classroom? Do you create your own? If so, what are some practices to keep in mind when creating rubrics that will be used to assess ELLs?
Take notes during your observation and interview as you will provide them when submitting this assignment.
Part 2: Digital Formative Assessment
Have a conversation with your mentor regarding an upcoming lesson they will be teaching. Investigate the lesson’s state standards and objectives and identify how to assess the objectives. Refer to the topic Resources or conduct research with your mentor to discuss and select a digital tool, app, or platform for creating a formative assessment.
Collaborate with your mentor to create a digital formative assessment to be used during the upcoming lesson. Ensure the assessment meets the following requirements:
Can be used as a warmup to start the lesson or as an exit ticket at the end of the lesson
Effectively assesses each student in the class, including any ELLs
Appropriately addresses all levels of English language proficiency or modifications are made to support each level
Digitally collects data the teacher can use to make instructional decisions
If time allows and the context is appropriate, administer the formative assessment with the support of your mentor.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist your mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Part 3: Reflection
Write a 250-500 word reflection regarding your observations and experience. Include the following:
Provide a screenshot or link to the formative assessment.
Briefly summarize the upcoming lesson that will use the digital formative assessment you and your mentor created. Include the state standards and objectives being addressed.
Describe how the digital formative assessment will be used to assess each student in the classroom, be appropriate for all levels of English language proficiency, and collect data the teacher can use to make instructional decisions.
Discuss how you plan to use technology to formatively assess students, including ELLs, in your future professional practice.
Submit your observation and discussion notes and reflection, including the link or screenshot of the digital formative assessment, in one document.
