The connection between aggression and violent video games is a contested issue. The paper seeks to disprove the belief that video games with violence significantly contribute to aggression by analyzing contributing elements in depth. Violent video game engagement does not cause aggressive behavior due to the lack of robust empirical evidence establishing a direct causal link between aggression and playing video games; subsequently, the findings from longitudinal studies show no significant link between aggression and playing video games with violence; and the presence of mediating factors such as anger, disinhibition, moral disengagement, and hostility that play a more significant role in explaining aggressive behavior.
Research has indicated that playing violent video games may lead to increased aggression, rather than actual physical violence. Additionally, any competitive video game or activity has the potential to elicit aggression. Blaming violent video games is an easy way out for those who avoid addressing the real factors responsible for violence in the US. Simple statistics do not support the claim that violent video games cause mass shootings or other violence. It is interesting to note that while sales of violent video games have risen significantly, rates of violent juvenile crime have decreased significantly as well. Studies have shown that violent video games can have an optimistic effect on kindness, civic engagement, and prosocial behaviors. I will agree that many risk factors are associated with youth violence, but video games are not among them.
