1. As Social Workers, when serving a child and their family, it is vital to recognize ecological and developmental factors. Some examples of these may be a child's age, needs of their development, or environmental context. Developmental factors may include physical or psychological. Meanwhile, ecological factors are the environmental context of where the child and family live. Based on Jon's age, developmental factors majorly impact children's and family’s well-being. Providing adequate care was seemingly hard for Jon's family, but his foster family is willing to give him all his needs. It is vital to understand what obstacles stand in the family's way, such as poverty or substance abuse. As a Social Worker, supporting children and families is what you do by providing advocacy, case management, education, or therapy. "Should a child be maltreated or if there is a concern that maltreatment is possible, specialized agencies and workers become involved in the child's life. These units are child protective service agencies" (Segal et al., 2019). Specific roles depend on the needs of the families or the children. Advocating for Jon's needs within the child welfare system will ensure he receives adequate care and services. If there was a conflict between Jon and his biological parents, the Social Worker could mediate to facilitate communication. By coordinating services for Jon and his family, the Social Worker could also provide education to develop the child or parents. Also, to solve any emotional problems, the family could receive therapy to overcome the situation. Social Workers provide support based on the specific needs of families based on the child welfare system. Being responsive and flexible is vital.

2. A social worker must evaluate a situation and create the client’s next best step. In Jon’s case, a social must prioritize his well-being. Part of his well-being comes from who’s surrounding Jon so, social must work with the bio family cautiously and with supervision. Social workers must also work with the foster family to assist with Jon’s transition between homes and the difference in his care. Segal et al. described the ecological approach as, “a framework for social workers to assess a client within the context of his or her environment,” (2019) so in Jon’s case we must consider his biological family’s maltreatment and substance abuse. We also need to consider his foster family's love for him and wanting him as a part of his family. Another factor is Jon’s developmental stage, Segal et al. described a 9-year-old’s stage as, “cognitive abilities are increasing rapidly—that is, skills in memory, conceptual thinking, deductive reasoning, and problem-solving are developing,” (2019) meaning he is absorbing his situation at the full extent. Jon’s current stage further emphasizes social work’s responsibility to prioritize his well-being and prevent potential behavioral issues.
