history multi-part question
Let us recall our Mission Statement 105 at the beginning of this semester:
We eschew a self-Orientalizing position while also avoiding simple-minded East Asian chauvinism; that is, Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans are neither especially backward, nor especially virtuous. Rather than focusing on just Chinese, Japanese, and Korean national histories, we look at these three areas in relation with each other and the rest of the world. We are telling the story of the emergence of the region known as East Asia and its ebbs and flows in the world, shaped by tradition, cultures, and peoples at the historical juncture of the modern. The creation of the nation states, variations in knowledge and goals, the interlinking of politics and economics, social organization, and culture all are given attention.?
From tea wars to the opium trade, from old yangban to new women, from competing versions of Pan-Asianism to a plethora of wars and revolutions in the twentieth century, we investigated the emergence of modern East Asia and the critical connectedness of China, Japan, and Korea, as well as their relations to the rest of the world. Choose ONE topic from your readings, lectures, and tutorials?different from your midterm paper topic but by no means limited to the aforementioned?and discuss: 1) the interconnections either within the East Asian region or between East Asian areas and the rest of the world; 2) the significance of such interconnections to our understanding of the formation of modern East Asia as we know it today; 3) how such interconnections contribute to or challenge your preconceived notions of colonialism, Eurocentrism, nationalism, or revolution among other major themes that are covered in EAS105.
The final essay asks for both an outline and a final paper (worth 5% and 20%, due on Mar. 24 and Apr. 10 at 11:59pm EST, respectively). The outline should contain a thesis, reflect the structure of your paper, and include examples that you plan to use in bullet points. Your final paper should be 5-7 pages double spaced including a bibliography. Please note that your final essay is not a research paper and extra reading/citation is not required and limited to maximally ONE. Top notch essays will reflect a good understanding and careful analysis of the readings, textbook, lectures, and tutorial discussions. Proper citations, according to the Chicago style, should be used to credit the readings.
Late work is discouraged but can be accepted at a 5% penalty for each day that an assignment is late.
