Legalizing Abortions
Abortions should be federally legal because females should have the right to do what they feel is best for their bodies. They should be able to make their own decision on if they feel like they should have a child and how pregnancy can put the mother or fetuss life in danger in some cases. Abortions rights are a basic right every woman should have, but taking someone’s right to choose, takes away their human rights. Anti-abortion advocates claim abortion is against Christianity and against Gods rules, that abortion is murder, and that it can lead to mental illness. There is no credible evidence for these claims. Abortion is a basic human right and taking it away removes womens right to choose. According to Amnesty International, under international human rights law, everyone has a right to life, a right to health, and a right to be free from violence, discrimination, and torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.?. By taking away womens right to choose whether or not they want an abortion, lawmakers violate the basic human right of bodily autonomy. It is important that we legalize abortions to eliminate unsafe abortions, prevent the danger to the mother, and to avoid money issues. Opponents believe that abortions should be illegal because it violates their religious beliefs but everyone has their own religious freedom, and should have the religious choice to decide if they want to have an abortion.
Abortion can save lives and is a form of healthcare. Removing abortion rights means denying healthcare to only certain individuals, which is a form of gender discrimination and puts lives in danger (Amnesty International). Also, the perception that abortion is unlawful or immoral leads to the stigmatization of women and girls by healthcare staff?among others,? and many women experience harassment when seeking abortion services (Amnesty International). When a woman is humiliated by healthcare providers she might seek another solution in the form of unsafe abortion (Amnesty International). If abortion is criminalized altogether, this becomes an even greater issue because there is no way to legally and safely get an abortion, so the risk of complications or death becomes greater. According to the World Health Organization, unsafe abortions are the third leading cause of maternal deaths worldwide and lead to an additional five million largely preventable disabilities? (Amnesty International). Every year, 50,000 maternal deaths are caused by unsafe or illegal abortions (ACOG).
In some cases, women need abortions because carrying a pregnancy to term would compromise their health. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that pregnancy complications?may be so severe that abortion is the only measure to preserve a womans health or save her life? (ACOG). For example, an Irish woman with pulmonary atresia and hypertension was denied an abortion even though becoming pregnant was certain to put her life at risk (Amnesty International). With this being said, it is clear that abortion is absolutely essential to women’s health.
One claim is that abortion is a sin and that it takes away a human life. Although that argument may be valid for some, others may not come from religious backgrounds or believe that this is a sin. In my opinion, its not fair to create laws based on religious values and expect everyone to follow them. Some religions even give advice that if you’re not ready to be in the position to be a mother you should consider having an abortion. Religions that support abortions are conservative and reform Judaism, Presbyterianism, and Unitarianism(Pew Research Center).
