Good morning class,?
Working in the social service sector with homeless individuals which include single adult men and homeless families led me to want to make changes at the policy level that could benefit this population to find a way to increase housing stability and reduce return to homelessness. The homeless population finds the stigma of being homeless, less trips to the doctor and isolation that are barriers that can prohibit the ability to remain in stable housing (Schiffler et al., 2023).?The homeless population faces barriers that include lack of housing, inability to attend medical appointments, and no support systems to help them navigate transportation (Schiffler et al.,?2023). These barriers exacerbate health conditions and can increase longer periods of homelessness, as well as contribute to loss of housing stability when not having the tools needed to help increase housing stability (Seide & Kang, 2022). Also, people who are homeless experience health problems that can include untreated illness and increased mental instability.?
My contribution through writing a dissertation to contribute to transforming healthcare for this marginalized population is to research and study support interventions during stays in homeless shelters that?begin during intake and be implemented into discharge planning and exit strategies. By providing a support system to increase the chances of remaining housing stable after leaving homelessness, can be truly transformative in helping those who experience chronic homelessness find a path to increase their ability to contribute to society and remove the stigma associated with being homeless. Barker & Maguire (2017) noted having people who have already experienced homelessness provide a social support system through peer intervention can help show those who need support a better way to live. Seide & Kang (2022) noted that the inclusion of outreach workers in the community who have experience homelessness as a practical solution in addressing homelessness. Outreach workers and peer supporters can be a bridge that can help those who find housing stability facilitate and navigate the systems through attending medical appointments, or helping these individuals navigate the world by providing support that is needed to help them feel less insecure. (Seide & Kang, 2022).?
This is a crisis I have found to be an important area as a society we can help those who experience homelessness find equitable access to care and a place to call home. Working in this industry for many years led me to want to find a solution that I dont see the same faces returning to homelessness after leaving the shelter. There is a gap that needs to be addressed which I want to research.?
