I do believe that an infectious disease like portrayed in “Contagion” is very possible in this day and age. Primarily because, we just lived through a pandemic, though Covid was far less deadly than the infectious disease in the movie, many of the scenes depicted in the movie such as masking, social distancing, looting, and the national guard could have been taken from the headlines in 2020 and 2021 almost verbatim. Also, people travel all over the world for business and pleasure. One never really knows that they are exposed to, and what we saw with Covid and how it was running rampant in China, and then started appearing all over the world, just shows how easy some infectious diseases can spread. Both Covid and the infectious disease in the movie spread via direct contact and airborne making them highly transmissible. Contaminated food can quickly spread infection to those who eat the food, but not typically at a pandemic or epidemic level.

I do not believe that a chronic disease could spread as rapidly. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke and chronic respiratory diseases are not transmitted to others. Chronic diseases such HIV/AIDS are transmissible but do not spread quickly as an infectious disease does. HIV/AIDS spreads primarily via shared needles and unsafe sex. HIV/AIDS highest transmission rate is through male-to-male sexual contact per the CDC (CDC, 2019). For this reason, this chronic disease would not spread as quickly as an infectious disease that can be spread via airborne droplets. Chronic diseases require medical care, medications to keep the disease from progressing or to keep the patient comfortable, especially if it is a terminal, chronic disease. Chronic diseases are described as long-term illness, whereas an infectious disease such as seen in the movie is a disease that affects a person rapidly and destroys their body’s ability to fight it and give enough time to build immunity, which resulted in rapid death.
