The Gilded Age, which spanned from the 1870s to the 1890s, was a period of significant changeand industrialization in the United States. During this time, the nation experienced a dramaticshift from an agrarian to an industrial economy, which had a profound impact on both farmersand industrial workers. This essay will focus on the ways in which industrialization affectedfarmers, particularly in terms of decreased demand for agricultural products and the expansionof railroads. I will use evidence from historical accounts and contemporary studies todemonstrate how industrialization impacted farmers during the Gilded Age and discuss theimplications of these changes. Ultimately, this essay will demonstrate that industrialization had asignificant impact on the lives of farmers during this period.Industrial workers, on the other hand, were affected by industrialization in different ways. Manywere drawn to the cities where new factory jobs were being created. However, these jobs oftencame with poor working conditions, low wages, and long hours. Many workers were also facingnew forms of exploitation, such as child labor and dangerous working conditions. This led to therise of labor unions and strikes, as workers sought to improve their working conditions andwages.Despite these challenges, industrialization also brought new opportunities for both farmers andindustrial workers. For farmers, the expansion of railroads made it easier to get their products tomarket, while for industrial workers, the new jobs provided a way to improve their standard ofliving. However, the challenges faced by these groups during the Gilded Age ultimately led tosignificant changes in the economy and society as they pushed for reforms and better workingconditions.Overproduction of crops occurred partly due to the westward expansion of homesteadfarms and partly because industrialization led to new farm tools that dramaticallyincreased crop yields. As farmers fell deeper into debt, whether it be to the local storeswhere they bought supplies or to the railroads that shipped their produce, their responsewas to increase crop production each year in the hope of earning more money withwhich to pay back their debt. The more they produced, the lower prices dropped. Tohard-working farmers, the notion that their own overproduction was the greatestcontributing factor to their debt was a completely foreign concept (Figure 20.12). Book
