I am an Indian, and Indian culture has affected my personal identity positively, it affects my education, the way I see life, and my belief and traditions. My family’s customs and traditions played a vital role in my pursuit of quality education and in building my communication skills. I am from Punjab State in India. We have a very vast and rich culture. Culture introduces shared values, including, beliefs, and how others may think, feel, or even act. Therefore, culture describes the way we learn, live, and behave. Because of this, many people believe that culture is an important part of our personality and self-being as a person. It has made me become humble, firm, and respectful. Because of my culture, I am comfortable adapting to understand the lifestyle and ethnicity of other cultures and people. I am excited in learning about other cultures and also learn their languages.
Also, in my culture, our ancestors and the elderly are highly regarded and respected. They are addressed with utmost respect and care. In our culture, we have joint families, and everyone lives together. I think that helps in making it easier for me to adjust to people. Our temples welcome, every religion, caste, and gender and are treated as an equal and we share the space and food. In our homes, we all eat together, and no one leaves the table until everyone is done eating. That is how it has made me disciplined, respectful, and generous, and also shaped me into a better person who is not reluctant in talking to others.
There are a few things that turn out as a misunderstanding in terms of communication. Verbal and Nonverbal communication are the main methods by which we communicate. Those can sometimes be interpreted as false, or the message can be delivered in the wrong way. The state that I belong to has 3 dialects. And the words used have different meanings for different dialect speaking people. It gets a little tricky there. Also, with western culture. It is not very common in our culture to greet every stranger by shaking hands or a hug. It is normally a gesture with a nod and joined hands.
I feel like I am a culture-oriented person. I try to evolve but also stay within my boundaries. I guess it is also because I have been raised in a household that has been very culturally focused. I like my culture and background and I am proud to be a part of it not just because it is my culture, or I am a part of it but because it helps me learn different and new things and also be open to the idea of so many different and various cultures in the world.
