PURPOSE STATEMENT FOR MSSW GRADUATE SCHOOL ADMISSION
Greetings ACU Graduate Admissions,
My name is Felicia Doss-Curtis , an Air Force Veteran, former Logistics Manager, and I hold a aAssociates Degree in Substance Abuse Counseling. I will also hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work once I graduate in May 2022 from Abilene Christian University. I have a passion for helping people, and providing solutions to difficult tasks. For over 16 years, my primary responsible has been taking care of others and making sure the mission needs are met at all times. I love focusing on improving workplace quality of life programs, in both a civilian and military settings. However, it was not until retiring from the military and working in corrections when I began to explore social work as a profession.
As a senior Millennial and Iraqi war veteran, I understand and empathize with the difficulties my peer group has when coping with life challenges. CDC National Center for Health Statistics, April 2020 Data Brief, states the suicide is the second leading cause for premature mortality of ages 10-34 and fourth leading cause for ages 35-54. Further evidence in traditional and social media shows there is dramatic polarization between what my peers say and how they behave (both privately and publicly). Collectively with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and a disruptive political situation leads me to believe there will be increase need for people with social work experience. I want to be a forefront of that need.
My social work aspiration is to advocate on behalf veterans, children and people with traumatic experiences. Earning a Master of Science degree in Social Work from ACU will be tremendous professional and educational advantage. As a future graduate student, I am eager to learn more about evidence-based practices and how I can apply what I learn at ACU to aid others in need. Regardless of race, gender, faith, sexual orientation or economic status, I believe that God has a plan for everyone therefore, I see my desire to obtain a social work degree as calling rather than a new career.
