What are some Internet of Things technologies that you use or are familiar with for navigating in the city (e.g., transit, cycling, etc.), using city services, or reducing energy use in the city? What are some of the benefits and drawbacks of using such technologies?

Nancy:

In a summary, the Internet of Things is the notion of linking any device to the Internet and other connected devices. The IOT is a massive system of interconnected things and people, which together gather and exchange data about how they are utilised and the atmosphere around them. Big cities are being fitted with these IOT’s in order to make things easy for people.

Transit app – sky train, busses and passenger ferries are some modes of public transport in lower mainland. Using public transportation is one of the most efficient ways for folks to save energy. . A single individual who moves from a 20-mile solo vehicle commute to public transit may cut yearly CO2 emissions more than 48,000 pounds per year. This equates to a 10% decrease in total greenhouse gas emissions produced by a typical two-adult, two-car family (K.C.A.T,2021). The transit app is a GPS enabled application that helps the user to find all the active modes of transit around and with live timings.

Advantages- The app makes it easier for people to use transit. It helps to pre plan their travel, so no time is wasted waiting for the busses and trains and people can reach their destination on time while saving energy and environment.

Disadvantage- the only drawback of this app is that sometimes when a buss or train is cancelled it does not reflect on the app.

The city of Vancouver has taken several steps to encourage people to walk or cycle in the city rather than driving. In the past few years in streets such as Hornby, Dunsmuir and other parts of city, two-way protected bike lanes are made to encourage people and it has been a successful project as it decreased in coming cars by a considerable percentage and more people ride the city on bicycle. The drawback it has is that there is almost no space for parking in those streets because the parking lanes have been converted into bike lanes.

The transit app and the interlinking system of bike lane and parking spots all over the city have reduces pollution and use of energy all around the city.

The Internet of Things is assisting help me in picking up the best route in my travel as it helps in determining the most effective paths as well as maximising fuel efficiency, not only me but even the logistics companies use such technology for tracking and tracing their goods, monitoring free spaces for parking of their vehicles.

The following are a few of the advantages of using IoT technology

• Improve the quality of service – IoT technology aid in the provision of far more reliable, up-to-date, actual figures to consumers, allowing them to effectively manage travels and enhance communication.

• Increased Security – The potential to use IoT allowed technology to monitor factors like bus speeds, bus component condition and the number of buses at a junction may all assist to protect the safety of our transportation facilities throughout the globe

• Environmental improvement – under this IOT, we as users are able to see the real time data regarding where is the traffic and what all are the alternative places from where they can continue their journey. Due to this, they are able to congestion and energy consumption can be reduced which further leads to good influence on the environment.
• The disadvantage are as below –
  • Risk of hack – While the amount of connected systems grows and therefore more data is shared within them, the risk of a scammer stealing private data grows as well.
  • Chances of misplacement of data – Under this IoT technology, the main challenging thing that company has to face is that there are not few devices whose data they have to connect and manage rather there are tons of devices on whom they have to perform as a result sometimes it becomes difficult to handle so many files and even worse sometimes the data can be misplaced.
  • Risk of the device getting bug – As all the devices are interconnected, if one of the devices gets affected through some kind of bug, every linked device would get manipulated.

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects—"things"—embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies to connect and exchange data with other devices and systems through the internet. These devices range in complexity from common household items to sophisticated industrial equipment(Oracle, 2021). I will show an example from my own experience. As I work at Shoppers Drug Mart, whenever we need to restock or order, we simply scan the barcode and it informs us how much we have in backstock and on shelves using the PDP system. As a result, staff may save time and energy by just checking on PDP to see how much they need to order. Another example I would like to provide is renting a bicycle. If someone wants to travel somewhere close, this is an excellent alternative. It will preserve the environment since no gases or hazardous particles will be released. It is, however, less expensive, and it may be booked using a mobile phone.Last but not least, the Transit app in the region where I resided is quite useful. I have been living in Canada from two years, I am using Transit app from day one to go anywhere. Benefits of Transit Directions: Transit provides directions and help for bus routes based on the desired destination. Transit displays all of the routes that may be used to go to a specific place.Available on phone: Anyone may use Transit on their phone by downloading the app and determining how much time and which route are required to reach a specific destination.
  • Disadvantage The major disadvantage of Transit is that sometimes the bus timings are not accurate and many times it happens that it shows different time and bus comes at different time. Also sometimes because of some errors it stop working and if person needs it urgently they cannot do anything.

Here I would like to explain some of the internets of things technologies that are helpful in navigating cities. 1. Real-time vehicle tracking technology. One example of this is the transit app in Canada. helpful is saving time and energy. 2. Smart trip scheduling systems. These systems basically used to organize outgoing trips. it provides all the information that is necessary to know before going to our desired place. Here are some benefits of these technologies: These technologies help in considering speed limits, distances, fuel theft, helpful in planning trips and solving any issues related to trips in the early stages. transit apps provide information regarding the nearby buses and trains. We can make plans to reach our destination by checking the real timing of transit vehicles. As every coin has two sides these IOT technologies has some drawbacks as well.as we use data in these technologies so, there are chances of privacy threat and security threat as well. cloud attacks are one of the negative point of this technology. For some people OTI technologies could be more complex like elder people, low educated people.
