Is there something to be said about religious traditions that require devout devotion vs. a very lackadaisical approach?

I am always taken back when I hear of others who radically misinterpret bad for good. For example, the news seems to be more and more frequented by those willing to strap explosives onto themselves, and carry out their plan in a public location “in the name of X” (their religious leader). It often makes me question my devotion and commitment to Jesus Christ when I hear of others willing to give up their life in His name. One of my best childhood friends growing up went on a mission with his church to a country he had never traveled and spent months learning the language prior to going…to me that was commitment. I often admire those so strongly committed when I find it hard to mention to my next-door neighbor that I attend church on a weekly basis. Is there something to be said about religious traditions that require devout devotion vs. a very lackadaisical approach? Please share your thoughts.
