International Relations of the Middle East
The authors of several chapters of your textbook have analyzed the nature, scope, and evolution of the Arab-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli conflicts and ramifications of its wars on world politics by employing several perspectives: Realism (balance of power, security dilemma), Identity (domestic and regional), and Liberal (institutional and ideological). The authors also relied on different levels of analysis to explain the outcome and analyze the ramifications of several “episodes” (56 and 67 wars; Oslo Accord) in this protracted conflict.
A) In a comparative analysis manner, outline the authors’ understanding of the origin of the conflict, the underlying, intermediate, and/or immediate causes of its wars, and the success and failure of the attempts to resolve the conflict.
B) Explain the authors’ logic for choosing their respective perspective and level of analysis, examine the strengths and weaknesses of their respective explanation, analysis, and interpretations, and explain their contributions to your understanding of the Middle East’s international relations and these two specific conflicts.
C) List, explain, and analyze the underlying, intermediate, and immediate causes of the “Arab-Israeli” conflict. Explain the distinction between the “Arab-Israeli” and “Palestinian-Israeli” conflicts, examine the ramifications of such distinction on the nature, scope, and outcome of international relations of the Middle East, and outline and explain which international relations perspective/paradigm is the explanatory factor to understanding the conflict.
Please provide comprehensive, logical, and coherent answers. State the premise of your arguments clearly and provide the supporting evidence to your analysis from the textbook, outside sources, as well as the lectures. Make sure that you indicate the distinction between the authors’ arguments and yours, and that you provide accurate citations of all quoted material
some of the expected framework :
* Underlying Reasons/Root Causes of ConflictThe right of the Jews to homeland in Palestine = Zionism = identity (constructivism)
*The right of Israel to exist as a state = internationally (regionally) recognized secured borders = sovereignty extended partition (realism) two states solution = peace process [(in general, Camp David, Oslo, Jordan in particular) (initiate reciprocal diplomatic recognition, diplomatic negotiations, reciprocity, normalization of relations, trade)] liberalism Arab recognition meant the end of hostilities and of resolving underlying (core) issue
*The right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state (state for the Jewish people) = two state for two peoples (constructivism)
*Intermediate CausesCold War
*Immediate Causes1948 = Israel declaration of independence1956 = nationalization of the Sues Canal 1967 = removal of UN troops from Sinai, closure of the Straits of Tiran, belligerent language, inability of Israel to sustain continuous mobilization (impact on economy, psychological)1973 = diplomatic deadlock, presence of Soviet troops on Egyptian soil1982 = invasion of Lebanon = launching rockets at Israeli border towns, (intermediate, PLO presence)
*Palestinian Israeli ConflictFormation of Palestinian identity
after 67 warFirst IntifadaOslo AccordSecond IntifadaPalestinian Authority (PLO/Fatah) v Hamas Role of Israeli-Arabs? (Palestinian citizens of Israel)
IMPORTANT : Please don’t try to cover everything in the chapter or in the framework. Basically, read the introduction and look for major events and also focus on the conclusion .
Look for root causes then look for the facts of the root causes of th conflicts.
