What role does emotional resilience play in returning from living abroad?
The research question guiding my study is: What role does emotional resilience play in returning from living abroad? Emotional resilience is essential in the repatriation process, as it reflects the ability to adapt, recover, and thrive when facing the challenges of returning home. Living abroad often involves profound cultural, social, and personal adjustments that can reshape one’s identity and worldview. My proposed hypothesis is that individuals with stronger emotional resilience will experience smoother reintegration upon returning home.
One challenge in this research is the small participant pool of only 7–10 graduate students. Another is that not all participants may have lived abroad. To address this limitation, I plan to adapt my study so that it examines perceptions of the emotional resilience required to live abroad, rather than limiting participation to those with firsthand international experience.
SECOND DISCUSSION:
My research question: Does excessive use of smartphones and technology negatively decrease our attention span, multitasking skills and focus than those who use technology less?
My hypothesis is Individuals who engage in excessive use of their smartphone and technology will show a decrease in their attention span, difficulty multitasking and the inability to focus than those who use technology less.
One of the challenges I can identify is identifying the word excessive. For my study I have two groups one is labeled high use, and the other is labeled low use. The high use group uses their phone for more than 4 hours a day and the low use group uses their phone less than 2 hours a day. The challenge I face is the word “excessive” because we all use our phones for different reasons and I must categorize those. For this study I can say excessive can be for non-academic phone purposes like doom-scrolling and social media and the other could be academic purposes such as studying. This could help me identify students if they are in the high use group or low use group, students can use self-reporting surveys to show how they spend their time. Another challenge I face is we are conducting the study from classes PSY 510 and PSY 520 with around 7-10 students and I’m worried my groups may be uneven and I don’t know how to solve that bump if it does occur. Does anyone have any advice of that does happen?
