Horizontal or lateral violence is described by Catalano (2015) as having “many of the same characteristics as bullying except that it takes place almost exclusively in the work setting” (p. 415). Historically, it was often overlooked as a type of hazing in the profession. Today, violence in our culture is a serious threat in all workplace environments with nursing being no exception.
