Anthropology Question
Please write a review of the paper assessing their observation, giving 3 specific points. By now, you will see that I gave you specific feedback, so copy my format.
I will grade you based on how well you understood the paper’s strengths and weaknesses. Being ‘nice’ does not count (nor will being ‘nasty’). What I look for is understanding the process of observation without judgment.
This is not a full essay: just give me 3 significant bullet points.
I observed a mall that is about 15 minutes away from where I live and I did this on March 19th, for about an hour and I chose the mall because it has a lot of things to observe and because I haven’t visited this mall at all in my life and thought it would make it easier to defamiliarize. I tried not to interact with the place by just sitting on the bench and observing others and this is what I got. A woman wearing a long-sleeved shirt is walking into a room that has what appears to have something on top of the wall. This woman is also carrying a bag which appears to have several items of which I couldn’t observe. The room that this lady walked into has a lot of people in it and I can see them because the wall is see-through. The people inside seem to be speaking to other people who have blue shirts on and they seem to have items of a rectangular shape in their hands. I also observed several other people going into and out of this room during my visit and it appears to me that there were groups of 1-5 of people who would walk closely together while walking in and out of the room. Right next to that room, I saw a man and a woman and what appeared to be a child and the woman was holding its hand and they walked into a different room that was next to the first room I described. They were walking together since they were very close to each other while walking and they didn’t separate from each other at all the entire time they walked into and out of the room. The man is wearing a coat that looks like it’s made of leather while having pants on which match the color and style of the coat. The man also had no hair on top of his head and he seemed to be talking to the woman and the child. The woman had a matching outfit with the man and the child had a shirt and pants on. They walked into a room that also had a wall made of glass since I could see through it and it appeared to have a lot of footwear, like 100 plus and they were footwear because they matched the same ones that all of the people in the mall were wearing on their feet. I saw those 3 walk up to a man who was separated from them by a wall that was less than half the length of the man and it appeared that the man that walked in with the woman and the child was speaking to the man that was separated about something. After about 2 or 3 minutes, the 3 walked out of the room and they continued to walk to the left of me until I couldn’t see them anymore. I then observed what appeared to be young people because they had smooth skin compared to a lot of other people I saw and they were running because the others were much slower compared to these two and I could hear their footwear making loud sounds when they touched the floor. One of the young people had what appeared to be a wooden plank with 4 wheels attached to the bottom of it and they were carrying it in their hands while the other had a bag that was strapped to the side of their body with unknown contents. I saw them approach an object that was next to a wall and one of them stopped entirely and took out something out of their pants, they then proceeded to insert a tiny (it was half the size of my hand or even less) rectangular object inside this thing that was next to the wall and then this person with their hand touched the thing several times in an unknown pattern until the thing ejected what appeared to me were very small, rectangular green objects and this thing ejected about 4 or 5 of them and the young person took it and the tiny object that they inserted as well and proceeded to put both of the objects into their pants which had two holes in them in which they could fit those objects into it. Then those two people went into a room that was facing the thing on the wall and they went up to a man and it appeared that they were talking to that man, after a minute and a half, they proceeded to give the green objects to this man and the man gave them what appeared to be cylinder shaped objects that had smoke coming from within it and then these two people proceeded to sit with their new acquired objects and they began to touch the edge of these objects with their mouth for about 5 seconds and then stop and this continued in intervals for another 20 to 25 minutes and then they stood up and walked out of the room and proceeded to walk faster than most of the other people i’ve observed and they continued until I couldn’t see them any longer. “Defamiliarizing the familiar” means that you are taking away the cultural implications from everyday life and you are observing the environment from a fresh new set of eyes without knowing the social rules. I learned that strangers all have similar features despite coming from different backgrounds of life like all of them had clothing. I also learned that not a single person did the exact same thing as another. Some unexpected questions came out like why were there more people outside the stores than inside despite the mall being mostly covered in stores? What caused some people to go into the shops and buy the products and others not despite looking interested in doing so?
Format
NO: “two members of staff” how would you know they are staff? the cleaning person is also working there but does not have the same suit. ” “two girls, ” how do you know they are girls? NO “were disagreeing” how would you know that? YES “torn clothes and was not wearing any shoes.” “speak to many of the people” “She held his upper arm in her hand.” these are right: no conclusion about what this all means What was very good was that you made no conclusion about the man sitting with the dog.
