Raise funnel to fill water seal to 2cm fill line. 2 Fill Suction Control Chamber to 20cm H2O (or desired pressure level) Remove vent plug, pour water to desired suction level. Replace vent plug. 3 Connect CDU to patient’s thoracic tube Connect chest drain to patient prior to initiating suction. 4 Attach wall suction tubing to anterior suction port on CDU Remove funnel and discard. Attach wall suction tubing to open end. Check to be sure that stopcock is in the OPEN position. 5 Position CDU at the correct level Place CDU in upright position below the patient’s chest level. 6 Reassess patient Reassess respiratory status, ensure drainage tubes are not kinked, and provide reassurance, answer questions, etc. 1.
