A nurse responsible for the health and well-being of young people dealing with binge drinking would face a challenging task. It’s important for the nurse to know that despite efforts to reduce binge drinking among those under 21, recent data suggests that progress has been minimal to non-detectable (ODPHP, n.d.). This issue is considered important enough to be researched, monitored, and promoted by Healthy People 2030. The lack of progress might be attributed to the social pressures that young people face. Peer pressure and the desire to fit in can make it challenging to prevent binge drinking. The nurse should realize that educating young people about the dangers of binge drinking would be the primary prevention intervention, and it could also be considered a tertiary prevention intervention. However, this may be a pessimistic viewpoint. Strategies for health education should be geared toward connecting with the audience. This could be done by using peers or influencers as a voice for change. Also, as this target group is older, more mature language and imagery could be leveraged.
