Tissue preparation

Description: An introduction to histopathological techniques used in the clinical laboratory setting. Topics include tissue preparation, fixation, embedding, sectioning, mounting, and staining to facilitate microscopic examination. The student will be required to identify common cellular and tissue structures and will be required to follow all laboratory and safety protocols. Good Clinical Laboratory Practices: Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is intended to promote the quality and validity of test data. It is a managerial concept covering the organizational process and the conditions under which laboratory studies are planned, performed, monitored, recorded, and reported (OECD GLP Guideline). Learning Objectives: 1. Outline the specimen journey through the laboratory. 2. List the routine staining of tissue sections used to aid diagnosis. 3. List the components of the light microscope. 4. Demonstrate common histopathology procedures such as embedding tissue in paraffin, tissue sectioning and mounting. 5. Discuss good laboratory practice for a clinical histopathology laboratory.
