Part 1. Use Zimmerman & Snow pp 394-398. What is caffeine? Describe the average consumption of caffeine for American adults. Use Table 7.13: Describe the percent of the daily caffeine consumption in 8 oz. of plain brewed coffee, plain, decaffeinated coffee, tea, brewed, and green tea. Describe your caffeine intake and decide whether your intake is: “low-moderate intake”; “moderate intake”; or “high intake”.
Describe several health benefits of caffeine. Describe the negative effects of caffeine on health. Do you use caffeine? Why or why not?
Caffeine is a chemical known as xanthine that is found in many fruits from the seeds, and leaves that is a natural pesticide. Caffeine is consumed by up to 90% of adults all around the world daily and is also known as a legal psychoactive drug (Zimmerman, M. & Snow, B, 2012).
Plain brewed coffee 8oz – contains 102 to 200 milligrams of caffeine
Plain decaffeinated coffee 8oz – contains 3-12 milligrams of caffeine
Tea brewed 8oz – contains 40 to 120 milligrams of caffeine
Green tea 8oz – contains 25 to 40 milligrams of caffeine
Redbull 8.5oz – contains 80 milligrams of caffeine
The FDA recommends for adults consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine which would still be considered a safe amount (Mayo Foundation, 2022). My caffeine consumption is usually one 8.5 oz Redbull or an 8oz brewed cup of coffee. Occasionally when I need the energy boost I will have a 12oz Redbull that contains 114 milligrams of caffeine. I would say my daily consumption of caffeine is a moderate intake that is 200 to 300 milligrams per day. I do try to drink two cups of water for every energy drink I consume to ensure my body is staying hydrated.
