      • In Ap. Trad. 22.1, use just the first phrase in the bishop’s prayer, which summarizes what has just happened in baptism. The rest of the prayer concerns concerns a second sacrament, Anointing, which is about to happen. We have left it aside.
    • Cyril of Jerusalem, Mystagogical Catecheses, Sermon 2 and Sermon 4.8. Stop there.
  • Secondary sources:
    • The Introductions for each of the two primary source texts, if you need any.
    • Outside sources: None needed. Use at risk of 0 on the essay. Your own reading of the source texts is what the assignment is about.

Eucharist:

• Question: What effects of participating in the eucharist & taking communion do Hippolytus and Patriarch Cyril point out?

Notes:

• Hippolytus’s reference to “milk and honey” (Ap. Trad. 23.2 [Easton]) points to Exodus 3:8, 17 and several places in Deuteronomy where those terms describe the land (Canaan) promised to Abraham and his descendants as a permanent homeland. For our purposes, the details are not important, but the promise is.
• Documentation:
  • In-text citations should be complete, but the title of the works can be abbreviated if your essay has a complete bibliography. In-text citations can take this form: (Cyril of Jerusalem, Myst. Cat. 4.2). Check above for Hippolytus.
