This assignment gives students the opportunity to reflect on an ethical problem area from their field experience and apply course learning to a real situation experienced in your field setting. Resolution of the ethical concern will require you to draw upon literature, theory, models for resolving ethical dilemmas and the Code of Ethics. Students are required to also use recent scholarly resources. Furthermore, you are expected to refer to the course readings. Students are also encouraged to use material from their ethics reflections for the paper. The topic can either focus on:
1) an actual practice case that has ethical implications;
2) an analysis of the ethical problem emerging from organizational functioning and operations or organizational policy, as identified in the Ethics Audit.
Format: answer as many of the bullets as applicable to your topic. The format follows the ethical decision-making model developed by Reamer.
- Introduction – Identify and discuss an ethical dilemma from practice – present a description of the issue, describing the dilemma including a brief discussion of the background and history of the problem. Why this is an ethical problem as opposed to an everyday operations or “business” problem?
- Identify the ethical issues, including the social work values and duties that conflict.
- Identify the individuals, groups and organizations who are likely to be affected by the ethical decision.
- Tentatively identify all possible courses of action and the participants involved in each, along with the possible benefits and risks for each.
- Thoroughly examine the reasons in favor of and opposed to each possible course of action, considering relevant:
- Cite the NASW Code of Ethics and any relevant legal principles
- Apply ethical theories, principles and guidelines to the case (for example, deontological and teleological-utilitarian perspectives and ethical guidelines based on them).
- Apply any relevant social work practice theory and principles.
- Discuss any personal values (including religious, cultural, and ethical values and political ideology), particularly conflicts between one’s own and others’ values.
- Which colleagues or appropriate experts would you consult and why (such as agency staff, supervisors, agency administrators, attorneys, ethics scholars).
- Propose the decision and document the decision-making process.
- How would you monitor, evaluate, and document the decision.
- What policies, procedures or training could be implemented to improve handling of similar ethical issues in future?
- Are there any implications for future research, policy change pr practice theory?
- Conclusion – Conclude by discussing how this ethical dilemma may have influenced your professional thinking and development.
