Write a 12-page (minimum) paper on how to USE FOUR HELPING SKILLS that you learned in class that you find interesting and research how to use them when dealing with a difficult client or diagnosis (Borderline Personality Disorder) that you find difficult. Chapter 18 of the book integrates all the information provided in class and can be used as part of your references for your paper. Remember to also use at LEAST FOUR PEER REVIEW ARTICLES FOR YOUR REFERENCES. For this paper, you need to have a minimum of 6 references in addition to the book. Of the 12 pages, 10 need to be of the content of the paper (the other 2 are the presentation and the references pages, respectively) and use APA 7th Format. Ex. Using self-disclosures (one out of four skills) with reluctant clients (difficult client or diagnosis).
The student will present their research findings to an audience of their peers and professor. The 20-minute presentation must include a multimedia component, allow for audience participation, and for an evaluation by the audience participants. The power point must be in APA 7th format containing a minimum of 15 slides (2 being presentation page and reference page and 13 of content; can include videos and/or graphics and/or role-play. Most include a q and a session with the group)
Diagnosis: Borderline Personality Disorder
Five Stages of Change (Prochaska, Norcross, & DiClemente, 1994)
Helping skills
- Precontemplation: A logical starting point for the model, where there is no intention of changing behavior; the person may be unaware that a problem exists. For example, the individual would not be aware of the negative effects of a sedentary life or would repeat to himself “You have to die of something”
- Contemplation: The person becomes aware that there is a problem, but has made no commitment to change. In our example, it would be someone who is aware that a sedentary life causes many health problems but has not made the decision to join a gym or repeats “he will join”.
- Preparation: The person is intent on taking action to correct the problem; usually requires buy-in from the client (i.e. the client is convinced that the change is good) and increased self-efficacy (i.e. the client believes s/he can make change). An example would be a person who goes to buy sportswear or enrolls in the municipal pool.
- Action: The person is in active modification of behavior. In our example, the person begins to do physical exercise.
- Maintenance: Sustained change occurs and new behavior(s) replaces old ones. Per this model, this stage is also transitional. Example: the person has been frequently going swimming or running regularly for more than six months.
