The author should assume that the reader has some knowledge of the subject but has not read the paper. Thus, the abstract should be intelligible and complete in itself; particularly it should not cite figures, tables, or sections of the paper. The opening sentence or two should, in general, indicate the subjects dealt with in the paper and should state the objectives of the investigation. It is also desirable to describe the treatment by one or more such terms as brief, exhaustive, theoretical, experimental, and so forth. Introduction Explain why you have a null hypothesis. (Refer to “The Scientific Method” in you lab manual.) Identify the independent variable, dependent variable, and control. Why have a control? Give enough information so that readers will understand what you are trying to do. Use APA format for citations. You must cite your sources. Material and Methods: This section is equivalent to the procedure in the lab manual (But do not copy from your lab manual). Give adequate directions so that someone could duplicate your experiment if they wanted to. Use past tense. Write in complete sentences. Do not use bullets or numbers. Write in paragraph form. Results: Briefly state your results in sentence form, and attach a table of your data. Convert your data to a graph. Make sure that your graph and table have a title followed by a 1-2 sentence explanation. Do not forget to also label the x and y axes and include the units and figure captions. Discussion: YOU will interpret your results in this section, determine whether or not your data supports your hypothesis and comment on possible errors (analysis of errors). (It is okay if your data does not support your hypothesis. Discuss why you support or reject your hypothesis based on the data.) If your results are not what you expected, comment on why things turned out the way they did. Conclusion section should be a brief statement about what you have found out based on your experiment.
