Purpose of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited psychotherapy technique that focuses on enhancing a person’s interpersonal connections and resolving emotional issues that are frequently based on those interactions, according to the video. The Leeds University IPT program is 16 sessions which are each 50 minutes long. There are three main stages including the assessment phase (initial phase), the middle/focal phase (intermediate phase), and the end stage (termination phase). The goal of the assessment stage is to pinpoint the issue area that will be the focus of treatment. The middle stage involved addressing the identified problem areas, and the end stage concentrated on consolidating treatment-related progress and getting patients ready for independent work in the future. ITP’s overarching objective is to eradicate mental symptoms by enhancing the patient’s present social and interpersonal functioning (Sadock et al., 2015).
Target Patient Population Benefiting from IPT.
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is effective for people of all ages, from all races, and from all socioeconomic backgrounds who have mild to severe depressive symptoms. IPT is selected because of a situation or interpersonal issue that causes depression. There are four different categories into which this can be placed. A disagreement with another person could arise and become a cause of strain for the person. Identification and modification of erroneous expectations and communication would be the aim of IPT in interpersonal role conflicts. The therapist would work with the client to explore how role expectations relate to conflict and approaches to effect relationship improvement. Second, transitioning into a new role may be difficult due to life changes. In role transitions, IPT aims to deal with the loss of the previous role, acknowledge the positive and negative facets of the new role, and foster self-esteem and mastery. The therapist would look at every facet of the old and new roles, address feelings of loss, study the social support system, and develop new skills (Huey, 2020).
Third, someone is experiencing grief and loss in their life. IPT aims to assist the client in getting over their loss and rekindling their interest in new relationships. Finally, building and maintaining meaningful relationships might be difficult. In this case, IPT aims to improve the caliber of current relationships and promote the development of new ones. IPT gives the client control over comprehending their depression by educating them about depression’s symptoms. It can aid in resolving interpersonal and societal issues connected to the onset and persistence of depression. In conclusion, Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) helps the goal of treating depression by highlighting the link between a person’s interpersonal relationships and their emotional well-being.
