Course Description
PSYC 351 raises awareness of the psychological factors that influence how people perceive culture, ethnicity and race. It explores counseling approaches and interventions shown to be multiculturally effective, with emphasis on the characteristics of the therapist. The course also critiques research that has contributed to misunderstanding members of minority cultures, highlighting the importance of objective scientific reporting for progress in mental health.
The course rationale centres on the idea that identity and culture strongly influence how people experience the world. It covers cultural humility and competence, justice, client worldview, communication and group dynamics, and how these shape best practice in the helping professions.
PSYC 351 Assignments Explained
Discussions
The course guide lists three discussions. For each, you post a thread of at least 250 words and reply to two classmates with at least 150 words each.
Tip: support your thread with the textbook and at least one scholarly source, and make your replies substantive by adding new insight rather than just agreeing.
Textbook Critique: Paper Proposal and Final Paper
This two-part assignment asks you to critique the course textbook using one supporting scholarly journal article or book and the Bible. The final paper is 4.5 pages of text (excluding the title and reference pages) in current APA format, with a biblical worldview integrated into your analysis. It uses four required headings: the competent counselor, support research, textbook critique, and personal reflection and Christian worldview.
Tip: a critique evaluates, not just summarises. Discuss the textbook's strengths and weaknesses with evidence. See how to write a critical analysis.
Annotated Bibliography
You'll read two articles provided in the course resources and write an annotated bibliography for both in current APA format.
Tip: each annotation should summarise the article's purpose, methods and findings, and evaluate its relevance and quality.
PowerPoint Presentation
You'll create a six-slide PowerPoint about one of the two provided articles, covering the study's hypothesis, participants, methods and results, plus a biblical application.
Tip: keep slides concise and visual, with one key point per slide.
Quizzes
Four quizzes cover the Learn material from the current and previous module. They're open-book and open-notes, with 38 to 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions (some may include matching and an essay question), and a 90-minute time limit.
How to Succeed in PSYC 351
1. Reflect honestly on your own culture
Multicultural counseling starts with self-awareness. Consider how your own background shapes your assumptions and communication.
2. Learn key concepts
Make sure you understand terms such as cultural humility, cultural competence, worldview, acculturation, microaggressions and privilege.
3. Read research critically
Ask who was studied, who conducted the research and whether findings apply across cultures.
4. Integrate faith thoughtfully
Liberty expects a biblical worldview in several assignments. Connect scriptural principles, such as the dignity of every person, to multicultural practice in a scholarly way.
5. Follow APA carefully
Check headings, citations and references in every paper. Our referencing and formatting page can help.
6. Prepare notes for quizzes
Even with open-book quizzes, the time limit means organised notes by module will save you valuable minutes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Summarising the textbook instead of critiquing it.
- Missing one of the four required headings in the critique.
- Writing annotations that only summarise, without evaluation.
- Adding biblical integration as an afterthought.
- Short, surface-level discussion replies.
