• According to this week’s instructional video on symbolism, a literary symbol refers to a concrete object that stands for an abstract emotion, feeling, or idea. Symbolism deepens a story’s meaning, some say adding additional layers to its theme or main idea (see video on theme). Each of the short stories we’ve read this week develops important ideas via the use of symbolism. Examine a single short story and how it uses 2-3 symbols to enrich one of the story’s themes. Please support your discussion with specific references to the text. (Include some quotations so that you can discuss the language and some events so that you can discuss the plot.)
