2.  A 12-year child with a terminal diagnosis of sarcoma of the arm has a large suppurating wound that has a foul odor and drains constantly, damaging the surrounding skin. The wound is painful and requires painful dressings daily. Her life expectancy is 6 months to a year. A surgical procedure could remove most of the tumor and facilitate closing of the skin. The surgery would not improve the child’s prognosis or extend her life.
