About PAC University’s Academic Success Center (ASC)
The Academic Success Center was established at the beginning of 2017 but gained considerable momentum in April 2017 when it conducted its first Tutorship Intensive Training Program. ASC exists to assist students develop academic rigor in their pursuit for excellence especially in the area of writing. Here, students are encouraged to think about their own progress and development as they reflect on their preparedness for the demands of higher education and the study habits and practices that will propel them towards this desired end.
The main focus is ‘English Language and Writing Skills Enhancement’ where students learn the fundamentals of writing such as paragraph and sentence skills, Language skills, organizational patterns, writing accuracy and fluency among others.
There are four ways through which a student can benefit from the center:
Booking an appointment
Attending our seminars and workshops which are announced at the beginning of each semester
Using the resources at the Center
Being a member of Public Speaking and/or Writers Clubs
Below are a few testimonials from students who have been active participants in the activities at the Center:
Tutorship Intensive Program 2017 (TIP) by Mohammed Mwakazinyumu – BA Communication Student
Recently, the Center hosted a training program for all students who were interested in learning English so that they would in turn assist others who would have language challenges in their academic journey.
The training was beneficial to me and I can only rate the experience as excellent. Most of the language issues that I had before enrolling were properly dealt with. The intensive group work enabled me to know, be part of, select and maintain groups in our academic journey .The days spent during TIP, as it came to be popularly referred to as, was worth it since activities were well scheduled and this kept us busy throughout.
The topical issues addressed include; patterns of writing academic work ,ranging from description to narration, illustrations ,cause and effect among others, grammar, organizational structures of different academic tasks, punctuations , plagiarism and sound origination in academic work, just to mention but a few. In addition, we learnt about the ethical issues in writing and the APA documentation style. All these have enabled me to become a better writer in my class activities.
Besides learning, we also had some time in the evening where we would informally interact and share snacks. This enabled the members to bond and to this day, many of us are still working together while still assisting those who visit the center. The last day was particularly memorable as we celebrated in a party that was held in honor of Mrs. Lori Tischiler from Houston, Texas in the USA, who was the main facilitator. We still remember most of her popular quotes and are really looking forward to her ‘second coming’ in 2018. We are proud of the Academic Success Center.
The Academic Success Center by Caroline Mwangi – Counseling Psychology student
During the Tutorship Intensive program, I came to the realization that,“The Pen is Mightier than a sword” by Edward Bulwer-Lytton(1939). This was one of Mrs. Tischler’s popular quotes. She had a way of making learning English and writing skills, a memorable experience.
Mrs. Tischler, the mother of Academic Success center, always said” Just get yourself to start writing, however little your content is”. I have proved it through the writing of my personal journal which I do at the end of every day. It is so powerful. What is written survives across many generations. Somebody has also said that in academia ‘if it is not written, it did not happen’.
Your experiences today, become a testimony tomorrow when written down. Our experiences would be lost and but thank God for the Pen through which we are able to keep records. Later when we return to them, now as readers, we are able to find hope and nourishment for the moment.
To master the art of writing, we must aim at using English grammar correctly. Unfortunately, for most of us “Sheng” and other informalities have become our norm. This affects the way we speak and write. Fortunately our University offers some general courses such as Introduction to English and Communication skills which help us to polish up these very important skills. As Dr. Kinuthia, always emphasizes to us, excellence in academics is grounded not only on acquisition of content, but also through how we communicate this content to the consumer, mainly delivered through speaking and writing. It is therefore paramount that we work on these skills and for PAC University; thank God we have the Academic Success Center to support us to achieve this.
