Assignment: Measuring global sex differences in personality.
Gender identity is defined as a personal conception of oneself as male or female . This concept is intimately related to the concept of gender role, which is defined as the outward manifestations of personality that reflect the gender identity. Gender identity, in nearly all instances, is self-identified, as a result of a combination of inherent and extrinsic or environmental factors; gender role, on the other hand, is manifested within society by observable factors such as behavior and appearance. For these reasons, I feel that the being dimensions of feminine and masculine are learned. From the very beginning of our lives, we are taught by our parents what our gender is. Parents say things such as “You’re a beautiful girl”, or “You are a handsome little man.” From this we determine our gender, they also teach us girls have vaginas( tu-tu’s) and boys have penises (we-we’s). For the most part, parents and adults often tell girls that they have to dress pretty and not be so rough, and little boys are often told that boys play outside and dolls are not meant for them to play with. These ideas are instilled in children at such a young age that sometimes it can prohibit them developing into the person they want to be.
I believe, that thinking of personality being defined in terms can be disadvantageous in nearly every since. If we are to believe that men are suppose to bring home the bacon, and women should stay at home and clean and take care of the children, where does this leave single parents? What happens when a woman’s car runs out of gas late night, and she hasn’t been taught how to properly pump gas? What about a crying child, in need of a quick cuddle session with dad, who doesn’t know empathy or has been taught compassion is a woman’s thing?

While I feel that some dimensions between feminine and masculine are learned, for the most part, I believe that the being-dimensions between feminine and masculine are innate. There are several differences between the male and female brains and this is what helps the personalities to be considered innate. For one, the male brain is considered to use seven times more gray matter while the female brain uses ten times more white matter (Jantz, 2014). What this means is that when a man is working on a task, he is so focused that he may not be aware of his surroundings and the people around him, focusing on the one task, while a woman can multi-task and do several tasks at once. Another example of how these behaviors are innate is through the development of the brain while a fetus. Women have an easier time discussing their feelings over males because a females brain has verbal centers on both sides of the brain while a male only has one, usually on the left side (Jantz, 2014). With the examples provided, these are reasons why I feel that the personalities are innate but it’s not to say that they cannot be learned. There are certain traits learned by male and female based on their surroundings and whom they chose to hang out with. These learned dimensions may not be the stronger part of their personality but they are still traits that can be learned.

Are the being-dimensions “feminine” and “masculine” innate or learned? What are the advantages and the disadvantages of thinking of “personality” as being defined in terms of gender?
I believe being “feminine” and “masculine” is learned and innate. When I was a child, I was very tomboyish and that is because I have many brothers. I copied many things they did but it was never taught to me. I was taught by my parents to be more feminine. Some things I have done in the past were not things girls do. The disadvantages of thinking of “personality” as being defined in terms of gender is, that sometimes certain genders do not match a personality. Personality is gender neutral and anyone can have any type of personality in my opinion. On the other hand someone may say that genders can be matched by personality. There has been surveys taken by men and woman. Usually women will score the same and vis versa. For instance the majority or woman are more sensitive than men. “…from an evolutionary perspective personality traits are clearly not neutral with respect to sexual selection” (Irwing, 2012).
