Field of Gerontology Paper

Gerontology is the scientific study of old age, the process of aging, and the particular problems of old people. The field of gerontology is very broad, and there are many subfields. Geriatrics focuses strictly on the medical conditions and disease of the aging, gerontology is a multidisciplinary study that incorporates biology, psychology and sociology. Because gerontology deals with multi-faceted aspects of aging. according to” Michelle Hall Between 2000 and 2030, the older population — people age 65 and older — in the United States will more than double from 35 million to 71.5 million, with the oldest of the older population — people over age 85 — as the fastest growing segment, according to the U.S. Census Bureau” (Growing number of older population in U.S. makes gerontology increasingly important major). I have learned about the processes associated with the bodily changes from middle age through later life such as the physical, mental, and social aspects and implications of aging, and the multidisciplinary investigation of societal changes resulting from an aging population. It is important to study gerontology because it makes us understand the older adults better and to appreciate the subject of aging studies/gerontology in general, there must be a commitment to create a multidisciplinary overview for all to understand the aging process across diverse groups of individuals (taking into account race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, etc.).
