Peer 1: The type of process to make beer is product focused and continuous. Beer is something that many people enjoy to drink when they are celebrating, stressed, watching a sports game, or enjoying dinner. It is what is in the beer that gives it its flavor and keeps the customers coming back and wanting more. It is how it is brewed that is part of the process. Similarly, paper is also made with the same type of process. It is something that is going to be used for a long time, yet it will develop over time. The type of process that makes wedding invitations is process focused and job shop. This is about stationery that is used in order to develop and create these invitations. Interestingly about wedding invitations is that they are all unique in accordance with the weddings’ theme. The type of process that makes automobiles is modular and repetitive. This has to do with all of the different parts that make up the vehicle. There are different parts of different cars which make them different from another. This is similar to motorcycles since their process is also made up of modular and repetitive. Although Big Macs are opposite to automobiles and motorcycles, they are also made up of the same process. Each of these things has different characteristics that make them different from one another, yet they all follow the same steps for production. Lastly, custom homes are made under the process of job shop with components made in product focused and modular facilities. In other words, it is kind of a mixture of everything since it can be produced uniquely, yet they follow the same steps in guidelines no matter the house.
Peer 2: According to Heizer, Render, &Munson (2018) “a firm’s process strategy is its approach to transforming resources into goods and services (p. 284)”. A firm can use four basic process strategies for every good or service this includes process focus, repetitive focus, product focus, and mass customization (p. 284). For instance, products such as beer and paper are examples of product focus that uses high volume; low variety processes; also called continuous processes because the product production takes too long and go through many steps. For example, the process used for making a beer called Brewing. The steps followed in the brewing process are: grinding and crushing the malt, brewing, filtering, fermentation, storing, and bottling (Flowers, 2018).
Repetitive focus is a product-oriented production process that uses modules and focusses on low volume, high variety of products also called a job shop. Products such as automobiles, motorcycles, and Big Macs use the repetitive process where the components of a product are previously manufactured or prepared, often in a continuous process (Heizer, Render, &Munson, 2018, p. 285). For example, Bic Mac modules consist of preparing or assembling meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions all together to get the burger sandwich.
Finally, the process of mass customization can be used to allow a customer to design unique features in a product by making a special order or build- to- order such as custom homes and wedding invitation while keeping the unit costs economically low or closer to that of mass- production. For example, home builders use mass- customization models by allowing customers to make changes to the base of a home package such as choosing the type of tiles, wall paint, or kitchen cabinet that they want or desire.
