Process Recording of Engagement Skills
A process recording is a detailed, written account of an interaction or encounter between a social worker and a client, serving as a tool for reflection, supervision, and learning. It typically begins with an introduction providing the meeting’s context, including the setting, purpose, and participants involved, along with its objectives. The narrative description follows, offering a verbatim account of the encounter, including spoken words and non-verbal behaviors, and noting significant behaviors, emotions, or reactions of the client and social worker.
Social workers completing the process recording reflect on their feelings and thoughts during the interaction, analyze the client’s feelings, needs, and concerns, and discuss the methods and techniques used throughout the encounter, including their effectiveness and any challenges. Social workers completing the process recording reflect on the interaction’s outcomes, determining whether the objectives of the meeting were met, and identifying any strengths and areas for improvement in future interactions. Often, process recordings are reviewed by the social workers and their supervisor as a tool to improve practice and to consider steps and strategies that may be useful in future meetings with the same client.
For this assignment, you complete the process recording as a student and reflect on the interactions and outcomes of the meeting. The focus is on the social worker’s engagement, methods, and strategies. This assignment aims to support your learning and future application of evidence-informed engagement strategies with future clients.

Preparing the Assignment
Please work with your supervisor to identify an opportunity to observe an intake session or meeting with a client new to the practicum agency. If this is not feasible, please ask for other opportunities to observe a meeting with clients when the focus is engagement. Explain to your practicum instructor that you have been tasked with conducting a process recording of a session between a social worker and a client as an assignment. To protect the social worker’s and clients’ confidentiality, do not collect names or use any identifying information in the recording or worksheet. The client and social worker must agree to you observing and taking notes from the encounter. You must be explicit that you are not using names or identifying information. Your focus is on the social worker’s approach and application of skills to engage their client. Engagement occurs most often at the beginning of each encounter. Therefore, you need only be present during the first ten minutes of the encounter.
