Understanding the Nervous System, Trauma, and the Four Fs
As a counselor-in-training, developing a working understanding of how the nervous system responds to threat, stress, and trauma is essential for ethical, effective, and compassionate care. This week’s focus on Polyvagal Theory (Porges) and Pete Walker’s Four F trauma responses (Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn) will help you begin identifying and responding to nervous system dysregulation in both you and your clients. These frameworks are critical in supporting individuals through crisis, dysregulation, and recovery in trauma-informed counseling.
Your initial post should be written as a cohesive narrative (not bullet points), integrating concepts and personal reflection. Use scholarly sources and/or weekly learning material to support your insights and a minimum of 400 words are required. Address both of the following sections:
1. Explain Polyvagal Theory & the Four Fs of Trauma Response
In your own words, explain the core concepts of Polyvagal Theory, including its three primary autonomic nervous system states:
· Ventral Vagal
· Sympathetic
· Dorsal Vagal
Then, describe how the Four F trauma responses— Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn—can emerge over time as adaptive survival strategies in response to threat.
· Connect each response to the autonomic state(s) they most often reflect.
· Discuss how these responses may present emotionally, relationally, or behaviorally in a person’s life, especially within the context of trauma.
2. Personal Application: Mapping Your Nervous System Response
Choose a mild-to-moderate stress incident from your own life in the past week that is appropriate for academic discussion. Briefly describe the event, and then apply Polyvagal Theory and the Four Fs to map your internal experience:
· Which autonomic state were you operating from during the incident?
· Which of the Four Fs best describes your response?
· How did you recognize your state (bodily cues, thoughts, emotions, or behaviors)?
· What helped you shift (or not shift) toward ventral vagal regulation?
Your discussion thread should be written as a cohesive narrative—avoid bullet points—and
should integrate course concepts, personal reflection, and spiritual application. Use at least two
scholarly sources and/or assigned weekly materials to support your insigh
