The Context for the Gospel in Paul’s Theology
Students will complete two Theological Reports which will synthesize themes and categories of Paul’s theology in light of the scope of the Pauline corpus to interpret individual passages from Paul’s letters. In each Theological Report, the student will compose responses within a provided template adding up to at least 1,000 words ( excluding footnotes and bibliography). At least two peer-reviewed sources other than this course’s textbook should be consulted in each report.
Theological Report 1: The Old Realm
In preparation for the assignment below, read Chapters 17–19 in Douglas J. Moo’s A Theology of Paul and His Letters. Pay special attention to the way Moo structures Chapter 19. Cite at least two peer-reviewed resources in addition to citing Moo’s text where appropriate. Follow Turabian style throughout, including the formatting of biblical references, footnotes, and bibliography.
To complete this Exegetical Report, use this document as your template.
1. What does Moo mean by his use of the term “old realm”? How is it distinct from the new realm? Explain why Moo first introduces the concept of the “new realm” in Chapters 17–18 in light of the theological issue of “plight-to-solution vs. solution-to-plight” (see esp. pp 405–7) (200 words).
2. In light of Moo’s explanation (pp. 407–15), describe the fundamental nature of the old realm in light of the nature and consequences of sin. Support your description with references from Paul’s letters, especially Eph 2:1–3 (200 words).
3. Provide further description of the old realm by explaining the relevance and significance of the narrative of Israel informing Paul’s theology. Consider how Paul addresses the issue of the Law in light of salvation history (200 words).
4. Given Moo’s explanation of the New Perspective on Paul as it pertains to the story of Israel contextualizing the old realm, explain the defining features of the New Perspective. Provide a brief description of the aspects of the New Perspective that Moo appreciates and the aspects that he critiques (200 words).
5. Summarize Paul’s conception of the human being in light of one or two of the following anthropological terms: “flesh”; “spirit”; “soul”; “body”; “mind”; “heart.” Support your description by citing references to at least two Pauline letters (150 words).
6. Based on your understanding of the old realm providing the context for the Gospel, provide a brief application of Eph 2:1–10 to a twenty-first century context (50 words).
