Exact Week 9 Discussion Prompt
Discussion: The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy Evaluation
In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making. A critical component of any policy design is evaluation of the results. How comfortable are you with the thought of becoming involved with such matters? Some nurses may be hesitant to get involved with policy evaluation. The preference may be to focus on the care and well-being of their patients; some nurses may feel they lack the expertise or time to engage in policy evaluation. However, nurses bring a unique perspective and patient advocacy that can add significant insight and impact to policy evaluation.
To Prepare:
In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making.
Review the Resources and reflect on the role of professional nurses in policy evaluation.
Reflect on the role of the RN/APRN in policy evaluation and how this role may differ from policy-making.
By Day 3 of Week 9
Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy evaluation. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might use to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy evaluation. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 9
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days (and not the same day as your initial post) in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence, or research.
Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.
Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research in the Walden Library.
Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.
Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.
Expand on your colleagues’ postings by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.
Key Requirements & Notes
Use APA 7th edition for in-text citations and references.
Support your post with evidence from required readings (e.g., Milstead & Short, Health Policy and Politics; resources on policy evaluation frameworks; articles on nursing’s role in evaluation).
Common opportunities discussed:
Participating in quality improvement or program evaluation committees in your organization.
Serving on state or national task forces/boards that evaluate healthcare policies (e.g., through ANA, AANP, or state BON).
Conducting or contributing to research that evaluates policy outcomes.
Using data from daily practice to inform evaluations or advocating through professional organizations.
Challenges often include: lack of time, limited training in evaluation methods, perceived lack of influence, or competing clinical demands. Strategies should be practical and evidence-based.
The initial post should be substantive (typically 2–3 well-developed paragraphs).
This discussion builds directly on the Week 8 discussion (policy-making) by shifting the focus to evaluation of policies/programs, emphasizing nurses’ unique contributions to assessing effectiveness, outcomes, and improvements for population health.
Important: The wording above reflects the standard, consistent prompt used in recent terms. Minor variations (e.g., emphasis on specific examples or slight rephrasing) may occur depending on the instructor, but the core requirements—at least two opportunities, challenges + solutions, and two strategies for advocacy/communication—remain the same.
