Policy & Advocacy for Improving Population Health NURS 6050 Week 7 Discussion
Exact Week 7 Discussion Prompt
Discussion: Evidence Base in Design
When politics and medical science intersect, there is often debate. Sometimes these debates result in the implementation of health-related policies. In this Discussion, you will identify a recently proposed health policy and share your analysis of the evidence in support of this policy.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on the role of professional nurses in policy evaluation.
Review the resources related to healthcare program design and implementation.
Select one recently proposed (or enacted) health-related policy. (It can be at the local, state, or federal level.)
Review the evidence base supporting or opposing the policy.
By Day 3 of Week 7
Post a description of the health policy you selected and a brief background for the problem or issue being addressed. Explain whether you believe there is an evidence base to support the proposed policy and explain why. Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 7
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days (and not the same day as your initial post) by either supporting or respectfully challenging their explanation on whether there is an evidence base to support the proposed health policy they described. Provide additional insights or contrasting perspectives using readings from the classroom or from your own research in the Walden Library. Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research. Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.
Key Requirements & Notes
Use APA 7th edition for in-text citations and references.
Choose a recently proposed or enacted health policy (examples students often use: mental health parity bills, telehealth expansion, safe staffing ratios, opioid crisis legislation, COVID-related policies, gun violence prevention as public health, or specific bills like the Mental Health Services for Students Act).
Focus on evidence base — discuss research studies, data, systematic reviews, or outcomes that support (or fail to support) the policy. Explain the strength or limitations of the evidence.
The initial post should be substantive (typically 2–3 well-developed paragraphs) and draw on required readings/resources from the module (e.g., Milstead & Short textbook chapters on program design/implementation, articles on evidence-based policy).
This discussion builds advocacy and critical analysis skills by linking evidence to real-world policy.
Important: Exact wording can vary slightly by instructor, cohort, or minor course updates, but the core focus—“Evidence Base in Design,” selecting a recent health policy, and analyzing supporting evidence—has been consistent in recent terms. There is often a second discussion in Week 8 on The Role of the RN/APRN in Policymaking.
