Advanced Pharmacology NURS 6521 Week 7 Discussion
Discussion Title (Primary Work for the Psychological Disorders Module)
Discussion: Decision Making When Treating Psychological Disorders
Module / Week
Week 7 (or Week 8 in some sections): Pharmacology for Psychological Disorders
(Module 6: Psychological Disorders)
Purpose / Learning Objectives
As an advanced practice nurse, treating patients who may present with psychological disorders requires critical clinical decision making. Understanding the guiding principles related to treating patients with psychological disorders, as well as the effects of pharmacotherapeutics on a patient’s overall health and well-being, is critical for safe and effective care.
This week, you examine types of drugs prescribed to patients with psychological disorders. You also examine potential impacts of pharmacotherapeutics used to treat psychological disorders on a patient’s pathophysiology.
Students will:
Evaluate patients for the treatment of psychological disorders.
Analyze decisions made throughout the diagnosis and treatment of patients with psychological disorders.
Analyze impacts of pharmacotherapeutics for psychological disorders on patient pathophysiology.
To Prepare
Review the Resources for this module (required readings on psychological disorders pharmacotherapy from the course textbook such as Rosenthal & Burchum or Arcangelo et al., media presentations, and other learning resources).
Select one of the interactive media pieces provided in the Resources (your Instructor may assign a specific one, or you choose from options such as cases involving depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or ADHD).
Reflect on the patient’s symptoms and aspects of the disorder presented in the interactive media piece.
Consider how you might assess and treat patients presenting with the symptoms of the psychological disorder in the case study.
Discussion Instructions
By Day 3 of Week 7 (or Week 8)
Post a description of the interactive media piece you selected (include the title or case name).
Then:
Recommend the most effective pharmacotherapeutic to treat the psychological disorder presented in the media piece. Include specific dosing, titration, monitoring parameters, and rationale.
Explain any potential impacts of the pharmacotherapeutic you selected on the patient’s pathophysiology.
Be specific and provide examples.
By Day 6 of Week 7 (or Week 8)
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses and respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days. Suggest additional factors, alternative pharmacotherapeutics, or considerations regarding impacts on pathophysiology that might improve the treatment plan. Provide rationale supported by the Learning Resources and current clinical guidelines (e.g., APA guidelines for depression, bipolar, schizophrenia).
Additional Requirements / Expectations
Your initial post should be substantive and demonstrate critical thinking by integrating course concepts, black box warnings (e.g., suicidality with antidepressants in young adults, metabolic effects of antipsychotics), drug interactions, patient-specific factors (age, comorbidities, pregnancy, etc.), and evidence-based guidelines.
Support your discussion with specific references to the Learning Resources (include citations in APA 7th edition format).
Posts should be professional, respectful, and contribute meaningfully to the discussion.
Late initial posts may incur point deductions per the Walden late policy.
Grading Rubric Highlights (Typical)
Excellent (A range): Clear identification of the case; evidence-based recommendation of the most effective pharmacotherapeutic with detailed rationale, dosing, and monitoring; insightful analysis of impacts on pathophysiology; strong integration of resources and guidelines; thoughtful peer responses.
Key Content Areas
Common Disorders Covered: Major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD.
Drug Classes: SSRIs/SNRIs, atypical antipsychotics, mood stabilizers (lithium, valproate, lamotrigine), stimulants/non-stimulants for ADHD, benzodiazepines (short-term), etc.
Important Considerations: Black box warnings, side effect profiles (e.g., metabolic syndrome with atypicals, serotonin syndrome, EPS, tardive dyskinesia), narrow therapeutic index drugs (lithium), and patient education.
This matches the standard prompt used in the majority of NURS 6521 sections for the psychological disorders module. Your instructor may assign a specific interactive media case or add minor clarifications, so always check the exact wording, available media pieces, and due dates in your course classroom under the relevant week > Discussion.
