Advanced Pathophysiology NURS 6512 Week 2 Discussion
Here are the exact discussion instructions for Week 2 of NURS 6512 Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning at Walden University.
Note on Course Title: NURS 6512 is not Advanced Pathophysiology (that is NURS 6501). NURS 6512 focuses on advanced health assessment skills, diagnostic reasoning, communication, and cultural considerations across the lifespan. The instructions below reflect the standard Week 2 discussion in this course.
Week 2 Discussion: Diversity and Health Assessments
Official Walden Instructions (standard wording used across recent terms):
Discussion: Diversity and Health Assessments
Effective communication is vital to constructing an accurate and detailed patient history. A patient’s health or illness is influenced by many factors, including age, gender, ethnicity, and environmental setting. There may also be significant cultural factors. In May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged Black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained from her observations and her personal experience, as a Black woman, that many African American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “Many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012). Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate at the time; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: Different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. APRNs and other healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity.
To Prepare
Review the following resources for this module:
Ball, J. W., Dains, J. E., Flynn, J. A., Solomon, B. S., & Stewart, R. W. (2019). Seidel’s guide to physical examination: An interprofessional approach (9th ed.). Chapters on cultural competence, building a health history, and related topics.
Other required readings and media on cultural awareness, diversity in health assessment, and effective communication.
Review the assigned case study for Week 2. Your Instructor will assign you one of the following case studies by Day 1 of Week 2 (check the Announcements section or the discussion area for your specific assignment):
Common Week 2 Case Studies (your instructor assigns one):
Case Study 1: A 46-year-old African American male presents for a follow-up appointment. He has a history of hypertension, obesity, and occasional alcohol use. He reports feeling “fine” but admits to challenges with medication adherence and lifestyle changes.
Case Study 2: A 32-year-old pregnant Latina woman who is concerned about weight gain and family expectations around body image and diet during pregnancy.
Case Study 3: An elderly Asian American patient with limited English proficiency and traditional cultural beliefs about health and illness.
Case Study 4: A 55-year-old White male executive with high stress, poor diet, and reluctance to discuss mental health or emotional concerns.
By Day 3 of Week 2
Post a description of how you would approach the assigned case study as an advanced practice nurse. Include the following in your discussion:
How would your communication and interview techniques for building a health history differ with the patient in the assigned case study?
How might you target your questions for building a health history based on the patient’s social determinants of health, gender, age, ethnicity, or other factors?
What risk assessment instruments would be appropriate to use with this patient, and why?
Identify any potential health-related risks based on the patient’s cultural, socioeconomic, or lifestyle factors.
Explain how you would address any cultural, gender, or other diversity considerations when building the health history.
Support your response with specific references to the Learning Resources and at least one additional scholarly source from the Walden Library. Use proper APA format for citations and references.
By Day 6 of Week 2
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on different case studies than your own. Suggest additional questions, alternative risk assessment tools, or ways to address cultural considerations that could enhance their approach. Expand on their posts with evidence from the Learning Resources or scholarly literature.
Submission and Grading
Initial post due by Day 3 of Week 2 (11:59 p.m. MT).
Responses to colleagues due by Day 6 of Week 2 (11:59 p.m. MT).
Total points: 100 (part of the overall discussion grade).
Refer to the Week 2 Discussion Rubric in your classroom for detailed grading criteria (emphasis on cultural sensitivity, communication strategies, risk assessment selection, scholarly support, and professional writing).
Additional Week 2 Activities in NURS 6512
Week 2 Assignment: Usually a written paper on “Building a Health History” (analyzing a specific case, developing targeted questions, selecting risk tools, and addressing cultural factors). Due by Day 7 of Week 2.
Shadow Health or Digital Clinical Experience (DCE) activities may also be introduced around this time.
Required readings focus on cultural competence, socioeconomic influences, and effective health history taking.
Tips for a High-Scoring Post (based on the rubric):
Emphasize patient-centered, culturally sensitive communication (e.g., using interpreters, open-ended questions, avoiding assumptions).
Link responses directly to social determinants of health, cultural beliefs, and evidence-based tools (e.g., CAGE for alcohol, PHQ-9 for depression, or culturally adapted risk screens).
Avoid generic answers — tailor everything to the specific assigned case.
Use scholarly support and APA formatting.
These instructions are based on the standard NURS 6512 syllabus and discussion prompts used in recent terms. Slight variations in exact case wording, required resources, or point allocation can occur depending on your instructor or term.
Always verify the exact instructions, your assigned case study, due dates, and full rubric in your specific course classroom (Canvas) under Week 2 → Discussion and Announcements on Day 1.
