The purpose of this discussion is to introduce you to the historical foundations of professional nursing and to begin developing your understanding of what it means to be a professional nurse. By exploring the evolution of nursing from its early beginnings to modern practice, you will start to articulate your own emerging professional identity and reflect on how history continues to shape contemporary nursing roles and public perception.Instructions Part 1: Initial Post (Due by Day 3)
Post a thoughtful response (approximately 400–500 words) that addresses all of the following:Define what it means to be a “professional nurse” in your own words. Include at least two characteristics that distinguish professional nursing from other healthcare occupations.
Discuss one major historical milestone in the development of professional nursing (examples: Florence Nightingale’s work during the Crimean War, Lillian Wald and the Henry Street Settlement, the establishment of the American Nurses Association, or the impact of World War II on nursing). Describe the milestone and its significance.
Explain how this event influenced the professionalization of nursing or changed the role/image of the nurse.
Reflect on how historical foundations continue to influence modern nursing practice today. Provide at least one specific example of how past events affect current nursing roles, education, or public perception.
Share your personal perspective: Why did you choose nursing as a profession? How do you envision your future role as a professional nurse, and how does understanding nursing history support your professional development?
Support your post with a minimum of two scholarly references (one must be from the assigned Week 1 readings or textbook, and one may be from a credible external source). Use APA 7th edition format for citations and references.Part 2: Responses to Colleagues (Due by Day 6)
