Explain to a dying patient your obligation to minister to the mourners gathered for his or her funerary services despite the patient’s expressed desire that there be “no grieving and mourning but just a celebration that I’m finally home with Jesus.”
Preserving “The Right to Grieve”
Assignment Introduction and Context
“The right to grieve” is an oxymoron. The involuntary reaction to bereavement is a natural expression of the pain of loss and the recognition of the adjustments to be made. Still, in many Christian circles, the admonition from I Thessalonians 4:13–14 is condensed, even altered, to read, “Do not grieve as though you had no hope.” Therefore, frequently, the dying express that they desire their funerals to be a celebration of life in which there are no open expressions of the pain of loss. Dare we deny them that their funerary services will express that they are “at home with Jesus” or, more generically, “in a better place?” No. But if, at the time of the funerary services, we explain to the bereaved that the elements of grief are unavoidable and the tasks of mourning are likely to be very helpful, we should also explain to the dying that we are compelled, for the sakes of those gathered, to serve them in their grief and mourning.
