Do you believe that converting natural forest to plantations could actually be a conservation strategy?
Environmentalists disagree about the role that plantations should play in global conservation. Plantations provide fewer ecosystem services than other forms of forest management, and tree growth is often promoted with fertilizer, herbicides, and prescribed fires. However, plantation forests provide a disproportionate amount of the world’s commercial wood fiber. If the allocation to plantations were increased to 12 percent, such forests could possibly meet over 50 percent of the global demand for wood fiber.
