The policy brief should include the following sections:
Title
Executive Summary
Statement of the Issue
Provide a brief statement describing the issue you want policy makers to address. Discuss why the issue matters and why it must be addressed imminently.
Background/Overview of the Research
Show and summarize the research behind your recommendations. What research has been conducted on the topic? How was the data collected? Include tables, charts, graphs, illustrations, and so on as necessary.
Current and Proposed Policies
Describe current policies surrounding the issue and why they are insufficient. Describe proposed policies.
Policy Recommendations
Use the research and data presented in the policy brief to inform your policy recommendations and why they make sense. Keep your recommendations rooted in fact, not persuasion. Remain succinct as you create achievable asks with a concise agenda.
References
Add appendices to provide more detailed data and research because you want to keep the main text of the brief easy to read quickly.
