Building Inclusive Communities: Fostering School Culture and Supporting Diverse Learners Presentation
Candidates will create a recorded PowerPoint with audio presentation on building an inclusive school community. They will use course readings, current research, and articles that reflect on the process of building an inclusive school community and incorporate it into their presentation.
Power Point Presentation
Planning Phase:
Candidates will plan for an engaging, and interactive “Back-to-School Meeting”. The target audience for the presentation will be the school’s faculty. Presentation will be based on an Instructional Model and on school data. They will include research to support their presentation. Candidates will develop a slide presentation with audio where they record themselves delivering the presentation. They will also provide speaker notes in the form of bulleted list or narrative guide in each slide that includes citations of resources used for reference.
Data Collection and Research Phase:
Candidates will gather the following data:
- Student Demographic Profile: number of students by subgroups—English as a second language (ESL), gifted and talented (GT), special education, 504, career and technical education, etc.)
- School faculty and staff Demographic Profile
- Student Performance Data: State, District and any other pertinent school data
- School Improvement Plan Goals
- Research on Instructional Models:
- UDL – Universal Design for Learning
- SIOP® – Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol
- CRT – Culturally Responsive Teaching
- DI – Direct Instruction
- Survey/feedback form
Presentation Development:
Candidates will use Microsoft Power Point to design presentation with audio and speaker notes.
Presentation sections include:
- Presentation Title
- Presentation Objective
- Presentation Agenda
- Demographic profile of students
- Demographic profile of faculty and staff
- Student performance data
- School Improvement Goals
- Vision for the school’s culture based on child-centered education, high expectation, student support; equity, inclusiveness, and social justice openness
- Technology in school: how is technology used in the school (student access to, use of, future of technology)
- Create two engaging “Getting-to-know-you” “Back-to-School” activities that communicate the importance of relationship building as related to the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Chosen Instructional Model (SIOP®, UDL, CRT, DI), its anticipated benefits for targeted student groups, and modeling for how to use it
- Close with an interactive activity where staff can practice the application of the Instructional Model
- Survey/Feedback Form- directions and at least five questions aligned with the session objectives, content, and activities
