One of the worst organizations I’ve been a part of was a process improvement group at my current duty assignment. While the mission was great, the group struggled a lot with communication and coordination. Three major tensions that really stood out were structure vs. creativity, individual vs. organization, and inclusion vs. exclusion (Mumby & Kuhn, 2019). The leaders were really strict about how things were done, which limited any creativity or new ideas. It often felt like decisions were made just to maintain control rather than to improve our efforts.

This affected daily communication because people didn’t feel safe speaking up or suggesting new ideas. Most meetings were one-way conversations where leaders talked at us instead of with us. This tension made communication feel forced and robotic, rather than collaborative or engaging.

Based on Chapter 1, I think the organization mostly followed the information transfer model, where communication was treated as just delivering messages (Mumby & Kuhn, 2019). There wasn’t much room for feedback or dialogue, and that definitely impacted how connected people felt to the organization.

If they had used a more constitutive or dialogic model of communication, where meaning is co-created, I believe we would have felt more included and motivated. It could have created a better sense of community and helped align individual passions with the group’s goals.
