For your first essay assignment, your task is to write a five-page essay that presents and advances your own interpretive argument about / analysis of a text that we have read and discussed as a class up to the midterm (from our work in the poetry and short story units). Your objective is to identify some aspect of your chosen text that interests you and that, in your interpretation, carries particular significance within the work (and to ones understanding of the work). For example, you might make an argument about a character in one of the stories or about one of the speakers ideas or observations in one of the poems; you might make an argument about a characters actions or behaviors in one of the stories; you might argue about the significance of a key pattern or theme in a poem or story. These are just a few of several possibilities. Once you have identified your interpretive issue within the text, your job is to explain your position on that issue and then articulate and advance your own clear and arguable thesis in support of your position (and grounded in careful close reading/analysis of specific evidence from the text). In other words, in presenting your argumentative analysis, you should show and analyze specific evidence from the text youve chosen (i.e., passages that are vital to and help illustrate your argument) to support your claims.
