For this paper, you will pick one essay/article from our text written from a different perspective than yours/by someone from a different background. The goal is to respond to and assess the authors argument and identify and analyze the rhetorical techniques used as well as the overall rhetorical situation using the tools and techniques you have learned, applying them to the analysis and critique of professional writing, as well as examining why the author might have these views. This paper is informal but should be well organized with supporting evidence from the text, including quotations where necessary to support your point in MLA format. This paper is your chance to show me what you have learned as you apply the skills to pieces of professional writing. The introduction should set up what article you are responding to including the title, author, source, date, and what its about. Your thesis should relate an overall opinion of the quality of the argument and rhetorical techniques you will examine in one clear sentence. (We will go over several samples in class.) You will organize the body of your paper by responding to the argument through identifying the main points/parts of and relating your reactions to/responses on the arguments, like the claim, supporting evidence, and counter-arguments as well as the two or three most important/influential rhetorical techniques the writer uses and why the author might have made these choices.Think of it like this, the initial body paragraphs will walk the reader through the parts of the writers argument including your thoughts and responses to them. The subsequent body paragraphs will look at how the writer got those points of the argument across and why. The conclusion will come to some kind of final judgment about the quality of the argument, writing/structure, and the effect the point of view has. This paper should be three to four pages in length, double spaced, and in Times New Roman size 12 font. Quotations should be cited correctly according to MLA format.Questions to consider before writing are: Why is the author writing? What is his/her argument? What do you think of the main points? Do you agree or disagree? What other ideas do the main points make you think of?What development strategies do the writers use? Narration, illustration, comparison and contrast, definition, process analysis, argument, classification? Does this help or hinder the writers argument/purpose?How does the writer organize their ideas? How does this help or hinder the writer’s purpose? What types of appeals are made to the reader? How does this affect the reader? What types of logical fallacies do the writes make? How does this affect the reader? Why might the author have made these choices?Grading Considerations In this paper I will be looking for:An overall point/thesis that relates your overall opinion of the argument and rhetorical techniques, the overall effectiveness of the argumentIdentification and explanation/analysis of two to three rhetorical techniques, logical fallacies, development strategies, and/or appeals with a connection to the writer’s point of viewConnections between the above techniques/strategies and its effect on the reader and the writers argumentClaims supported with textual evidence in the form of quotes in every body paragraphAn organization appropriate to your purpose; paper is well organized and makes sense as a whole; paper is easy to follow and progresses in a logical mannerPrecision and accuracy of word choiceSentences are not only formed correctly, but also read smoothly; sentences, paragraphs, and paper as a whole are clear and easy to understandCorrect citations following MLA format
