Unit 3 discussion response_MT304

One organization that does not have a flat structure is the United States Army. There are many “managers” (junior and senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and junior and senior officers) with multiple different roles. There are many levels in the chain of command, all with important managerial and leadership roles that need to be played.
The US Army would be an example of pattern 2 from the leadership patterns in “The Art of Leadership” by Curtis in 2021. Pattern 2 is called the “impoverished leadership” due to it having two different ways it could work. One is when the leaders care for their members’ input and overall well-being, while the other is the opposite. Most of the time, I have seen units where the leaders do have junior NCOs participate in meetings and care for their Soldiers, but sadly, that is not always the case.
One example of a company that uses a matrix structure is Phillips. They have different regional managers and project managers. Having different people in charge can work; for example the project manager is in charge of that specific project, and the regional manager is in charge of that region. The confusing part is if the two people in charge are not communicating well and the employees have to figure out who to listen to.
