Paper Submission
This paper must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central Time (USA) on Thursday, November 14.
Take note if you are in another time zone. Specifically, the paper must be submitted in Canvas
using the link for this assignment that is in the “EEX6051 Assignments Module.”
Scenario
This topic addresses establishing the conditions for students to learn and demonstrate what they
know and can do.
The scenario is that you are a general education teacher teaching mathematics to three 3rd-grade
classrooms, totaling 77 students. That is to say, the students from three different classrooms
rotate to your room for 90-minute blocks of mathematics instruction. Across the three
classrooms, you have 15 students who have accommodations documented in either their
individualized education program (IEP) or Section 504 plan. On average, each student has three
accommodations. The most common accommodations across the 15 students are listed below.
• Extended time on tests and assignments
• Read and/or paraphrase directions
• A scribe to produce written responses on assignments and tests
• Complete tests in a small group
• Preferential seating
Additionally, three students have modifications. In each instance, the modification involves the
student working to acquire kindergarten/beginning 1st-grade mathematics content. Each student
is characterized as having a moderate-significant disability and is accompanied by a
paraprofessional in a general education classroom.
A special education teacher has been assigned to work with the third-grade teachers and students.
She creates her schedule based on the content in the IEPs of the students who receive special
education services.
Directions
For this assignment, you are to write a 1 ½ page, single-spaced paper addressing two matters
about the topic, “Accommodations and Modifications.”
1. You must explain the difference between an accommodation and a modification and
describe the four types of accommodations.
2. Based on the scenario presented above, discuss a minimum of three issues that
immediately come to mind as you consider how you will address the implementation of
the students’ accommodations and modifications. One of these issues must be your
thoughts regarding the role a special education teacher at your school would fulfill in
supporting you in providing these students’ accommodations and modifications.
Work through the content in the References section below to acquire the necessary knowledge to
address these two matters.
In addition to the directions you are currently reading, refer to the Microsoft Word template you
must use to write your paper. I have placed this template in the directions for this assignment
presented in the aforementioned Canvas assignments modules. The template contains all of the
proper formatting, which is as follows:
1. Your name, the paper’s title, and page number are to be listed in the header.
2. Use 1” top, bottom, left, and right margins.
3. Use the following font: 12-point Times New Roman. Use plain text for the content in the
body of the paper and bold text for the headings.
4. Single space throughout the entire body of the document, and indent the first line of each
paragraph.
5. Place the following two headings flush left and in bold text: (a) Distinguishing
Accommodations From Modifications and (b) Three Issues About the Classroom
Scenario.
6. Write in complete sentences throughout the paper
You will note that I put example text in the template. To efficiently use the template, replace my
example text with yours. Begin by putting your name in place of the words “Your Name” in the
header, and then replace all of the example text I put under the two headings.
Grading Criteria
The assignment is worth 50 points. I will evaluate the paper you submit in Canvas based on
proper grammar (i.e., spelling, punctuation, sentence structure), content (i.e., properly addressing
the required content in each part of the paper), and formatting. A copy of the grading criteria is
available in the directions for this assignment, which are presented in the aforementioned
assignment modules.
Finally, ensure you do not exceed the 1 ½ page limit. I will not consider anything you write
beyond 1 ½ pages and will deduct points for not properly formatting the paper.
Contact me with any questions you have about the assignment.
